FIGURE 4.1

Physician lancing a bubo on the neck, as depicted in a fifteenth-century fresco from the St. Sebastian chapel, Lanslevillard, France. The pain of this procedure is indicated by the fact that an assistant must hold the female patient steady in his arms.

The Muslim physician from Almería Ibn Khātima related one cautionary tale about cutting into a bubo, told to him secondhand:

A scarificator [i.e., bloodletter] told me of one man who was an ignorant practitioner of the art [of bloodletting], that he ordered him to open an abscess on the armpit that had just appeared, before it had matured [i.e., ripened]. He drained it and collected the fresh blood, [but] the patient fainted, his heart emptied itself [of blood] and the patient died.165
